Conference Report - A snapshot of the numbers!

A big thank you to all who presented and attended our online Conference on November 6 and 7!

We had 21 presenters from across our Chapter Region, and beyond.

We had 103 registrants, with almost 90% attending synchronously.

Thanks to the support of our vendor sponsorship from Scite.ai and Consensus, and our Scholarship Raffle Fund, which raised $235, we will have funding to support professional development and programming through our chapter!

The registration fees covered the costs of the platform, and will allow for a $500 donation to the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums. As noted during registration and at the conference, we do this in order to make our land acknowledgements more meaningful by actively supporting Tribal Libraries and their work.

More conference materials and reports will be shared in the coming days!

Consider running for the PNC MLA Treasurer – POV past treasurer, Heather:

I became a PNC MLA treasurer without any previous experience, and it was a wonderful way to engage in supporting the PNC MLA and gaining professional volunteer experience (which can count toward AHIP) and best of socializing with peers that face the same joys and challenges you do.

What was I doing as Treasurer? A day in the life:

For the most part, the demands are minimal – I would pay board expenses, mostly digitally and worked with a dedicated bank representative to setup banking access. I would run expense and income reports and also do a quarterly report (expenses might be donations or speaker honoraria, and other minimal board expenses like the zoom subscription. For income reports (such as membership payments and bank statements which can be pulled from their online platforms) and I simply entered these into a prepopulated google doc report for a quarterly report for the board. Finally, I submitted a tax report form to the MLA using said google doc report and found space for one box to store records in my home/office. Board meetings run regularly but were flexible in allowing me to not attend if I had the occasional conflict.

What did I gain?

This was the most significant part for me - I gained professional experience volunteering for an exceptional organization and meeting other fantastic and highly supportive members. The Past Treasurer is available to train and mentor the incoming treasurer. In fact, everyone on the board is helpful and will answer any questions you may have. If you’re considering – just do it, you will not regret it! And you will gain an instant and lifelong support network of talented professional librarians working in the PNW.

From Ekaterini, Current Chair:

Having worked as PNC webmaster for a few years, I'd enjoyed being part of a librarian community beyond my day-job. I ran for Chair, knowing to some extent what I was getting into, as I was familiar with many of the board members, and some of the PNC MLA members too. With the current rhythm of the board, we meet weekly, and that has been really helpful in keeping momentum and building closer ties to professionals whom I really admire and learn from every week. Outside of the board meetings and any board initiatives you choose to instigate, there are a few official duties to MLA - specifically, submitting two short reports on chapter activities. As Chair, you get to work with the board to set goals and priorities for the year so you can make the work fit your bandwidth and the chapter needs. As past-Chair, you coordinate the nominations for the new board member positions and are still part of the board to help keep continuity for any on-going programs and projects.

Serving as Chair of PNC MLA has been a great way to engage with the profession during a particularly challenging time. Over the last few years, we've really seen a strong re-connection with members, so it's a great time to step in and get to be part of a group of incredibly informed colleagues across the PNW.

Joining us from OHSU in Portland, Marijane won the drawing for a free year of MLA membership offered during our PNCMLA membership and renewal period. Upon learning of her selection, Marijane replied "Oh wow! The drawing was why I decided to reinstate my membership but I really did not expect I’d win it." We are thrilled to have her reinstated with PNCMLA and to support her engagement with MLA over the next year.

2024 PNCMLA Holiday Meetups!

During the holiday season PNC/MLA members and our colleagues joined in the celebrations by organizing 2 meetups – one in Seattle and one in Portland. Despite some last-minute fine tuning, we had an excellent turnout and most importantly, lots of fun! It was fantastic to socialize in person. We would like to thank the 2024 PNC/MLA board for supporting these local in-person meetups and their generous donation of the delicious appetizers!

PNC/MLA held a meet-up in Seattle at the Elysian Brewery on Capitol Hill on a very rainy Friday the 13th. Our group shared festive beverages, delicious food, and wonderful conversation. Board members Ekaterini Papadopoulou (Seattle University), Teresa Jewell (University of Washington), Frances Chu (Providence), and Mary Beth McAteer (Virginia Mason) joined together with Carolyn Martin (NNLM Region 5), Margaret Holt (University of Washington), Amber Mak (University of Washington), Deb Gallaher (Bastyr), Heidi Hetzel (Seattle University), and Ann Glusker (UC Berkeley). We had a great time together!

On Friday, December 20, 2024, another group met at StormBreaker Brewing in Portland. Present were organizers, Heather Hawley (Legacy Health), Nicole Vollum (University of Western States), and Basia Delawska-Elliott (Providence). We were joined by Melinda Davies (Kaiser Research), Tim Zeigler (University of Washington), and Jonathan Ratliff (Samaritan Health). Jonathan came all the way from Corvallis to share some holiday cheer with us!

We had a wonderful time learning about each other and discussing everything from library school, through library advocacy, to publisher relations.

Happy New Year from PNC/MLA - as you may know, a new year means a new board - be sure to visit 2025 Board List to see those changes.

Membership:

Remember to renew your PNCMLA membership for 2025! You have a chance to win an MLA membership if you renew before January 17^th. All members who have renewed for 2025 with an "Active" member status and renewal date of Jan 1, 2026 will be placed in a drawing for MLA membership dues.

Open Meetings:

We will continue to hold monthly open meetings for all PNC/MLA members, or those interested in hearing more about PNC/MLA.

Open meetings will be the first Thursday of the month on Zoom, for our next meeting, we will be discussing the creation of an AI toolkit for the chapter, opening discussions for a PNC/MLA 2025 Conference, and planning more in-person meet-ups after the successful end-of year events in Portland and Seattle.

$1000 Raised for the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums

We are happy to report that a total of $1000 was donated to the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums following the 2023 PNCMLA Conference. Standing for the meaningful intention behind Indigenous land acknowledgement, PNCMLA is committed to the active support of regional Tribal libraries and their work.

The Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) is "an international non-profit organization that maintains a network of support for Indigenous programs, provides culturally relevant programming and services, encourages collaboration among tribal and non-tribal cultural institutions, and articulates contemporary issues related to developing and sustaining the cultural sovereignty of Native Nations."

2023 Conference Keynote Address:

Title: How Medical Librarians Can Stop the Spread of Retracted Research

Bio: Dr. Jodi Schneider is Associate Professor of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she directs the Information Quality Lab. She studies the science of science through the lens of arguments, evidence, and persuasion. Her work evaluates tools to reduce information overload in medical literature and develops approaches to improve citation integrity. Her work has been funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the European Commission, IMLS, NIH, ORI, Science Foundation Ireland, and an NSF CAREER award. She is a Public Voices Fellow of the OpEd Project and the PI of Reducing the Inadvertent Spread of Retracted Science.

Presentation: Homelessness and Inclusion Health

The interactions between homelessness and health are complex. Having a greater understanding of these interactions, of complex trauma, historical trauma including racism, and the negative effects of social exclusion on health is essential for librarians and others in supportive roles. Evidence-based interventions like inclusion health, health through housing, and health literacy supportive education, help to improve the health and life trajectories of people experiencing homelessness. NNLM Region Changes

Statement from PNCMLA concerning the changes in the NNLM regions

As you may have heard, the Network of the National Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) will be re-drawing their component regions for the next five-year grant cycle. This change will take place on May 1, 2021; the member states of our Chapter (bolded) will be affected as follows:

Current Regions:

Pacific Northwest Region: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

The Pacific Northwest Region is based in Seattle, WA, at the University of Washington.

Pacific Southwest Region: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and US Territories in the Pacific Basin.

The Pacific Southwest Region is based in Los Angeles, CA, at the University of California, Los Angeles.

New Regions:

Region 4: Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming

Region 5: Alaska, Oregon, Washington, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and U.S. Territories and Freely Associated States in the Pacific

Despite these changes to the NNLM Regions, PNC/MLA is not planning to make any changes to our boundaries based on the new regions -- we value our colleagues in Idaho and Montana! We are also looking forward to working closely with our Pacific Southwest Region neighbors as part of Region 5.

Statement on Police Brutality, Systemic Racism and Violence

Statement from the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association

On June 1st, 2020, the African American Medical Librarians Alliance (AAMLA) released a statement about police brutality and systemic racism and violence. We at the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association (PNC/MLA) fully support and stand in solidarity with AAMLA and all Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in this fight against systemic racism and police brutality.

In light of recent events and the need to diversify the predominant “whiteness” of our library profession, the PNC is committed to establishing a Diversity Committee that will help our Chapter to fulfill our values of diversity, equality, and inclusion. This committee will provide our members with educational opportunities to improve our understanding and practice of anti-racism and amplify the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color within our community.
