Session Title: Homelessness and Inclusion Health

The interactions between homelessness and health are complex. Having a greater understanding of these interactions, of complex trauma, historical trauma including racism, and the negative effects of social exclusion on health is essential for librarians and others in supportive roles. Evidence-based interventions like inclusion health, health through housing, and health literacy supportive education, help to improve the health and life trajectories of people experiencing homelessness. Brief case studies and discussion of the role of librarians will be included in this presentation.
The PNC-MLA Health Equity and Diversity Speaker Series is a collaboration between NNLM Region 5 and Pacific Northwest Chapter/Medical Library Association (PNC-MLA) through the efforts of its Diversity Committee.
Presenter: Josephine Ensign is Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. She teaches public health, health policy, and health humanities. She has been a nurse for forty years and has the lived experience of homelessness as a young adult. Her scholarship and practice as a nurse practitioner focus on trauma-informed care and health inequities for people marginalized by poverty and homelessness. She has also authored books, essays, and articles on the topic of homelessness.

In today's increasingly diverse world, it is more important than ever for data communicators to make sure that the way they analyze and present their data upholds the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and avoids perpetuating harm. This session will offer a set of starting points on how to apply an equity lens to the way we visualize data. Participants will learn about considerations surrounding the use of language, color, icons and imagery, ordering, and more in their charts and graphs. Participants should walk away from this session with an understanding of how to create and evaluate data-driven visuals that embody a DEI approach.

Increasing Environmental Health Literacy in a Native American Community (or "Guardians of the Living Water")
Who: Dr. Vanessa Simonds
When: October 28, 2021 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM PDT
What: Dr. Vanessa Simonds will share her community-based participatory research, education, and outreach with Apsáalooke (Crow) tribal youth in order to increase their health literacy. Her project, developed in collaboration with Apsáalooke community members, developed and piloted an intervention to increase children's water-related environmental health literacy skills and to transfer that knowledge to others in their schools, families, and communities. This project was unique because existing and past interventions for mitigating environmental risks on tribal lands have focused primarily on educating the community through the adult population.
